Alerts Insight, Week of 1/22: What are the Global Ramifications of Lafarge’s Landmark Lawsuit Verdict?

In our latest Alert Insight post, we share an alert our system generated last week that would be relevant to anyone watching the #manufacturing#industrials and #materials industries.

On Tuesday, January 16, 2024, we learned at 9:24 AM EST from Agence France Presse (AFP) that the French Court of Cassation validated the lawsuit of “complicity in crimes against humanity” filed against Lafarge, a French cement company now part of the Holcim Group. This could be viewed as old news, since the lawsuit was filed in 2016, and in October 2022, Lafarge pleaded guilty in a US Federal court and agreed to pay $778M in fines. However, Lafarge is the first company in the world to be charged with “complicity in crimes against humanity,” and the French Court of Cassation has final say in confirming the charge.

In the current tug of war for influence in #Africa and the #MiddleEast, this judgment will have a geopolitical impact that will reverberate for years.
